All the fun of the 2013 Alderley Edge May Fair

Thankfully the heavy rain, which had been forecast all week, held off and the Alderley Edge May Fair was another great success.

Hundreds of people braved the cold and damp to enjoyed an action packed day in the park.

The fun kicked off with a parade through the village featuring the wizard and his band of knights, a samba band, a stilt walker, brass band, town crier, jazz band, tractors, hockey players, fancy dress contestants and our May Queen, 8-year-old girl Rianne Braisdell.

The crowd then headed down to Alderley Edge Park where the afternoon's proceedings started with May Pole dancing by Ryleys School.

Entertainment in the Wizard's Arena included a fun dog show, tug of war competition, falconry display, rhythmic gymnastics and samba band.

Whilst over on the Golden Triangle Stage Alderley Edge School Choir, Macclesfield Junior Brass Band, Ryleys Woodwind Band, Mottram Jive Club, Moss Rose Community Brass Band and Adlington Morris men performed. They were followed by the Sue Morris School of Ballet, The Sylks and Pepper Town Jazz Band.

Winners in the fancy dress competition, judged by Coronation Street star Simon Gregson were Eva and Allegra in the pre-school category, Ruby and Merlina aged 4 to 7 and Zena in the over 7s category.

Amongst the many attractions in the park there was hockey coaching, cue balls, crazy golf, zorb balls, a bungie trampoline, bouncy castles, fairground rides and a whole host of stalls from local businesses and organisations.

The May Fair was organised for the third consecutive year by Alderley Edge resident Christine Munro and a small group of volunteers including Kath Foster, Geoff Hall, Dave Lomas, Paul Marshall and Mike Taylorson.

They put in an enormous amount of time and effort in to creating another fantastic day for the community.

Christine Munro said "I can't tell you how relieved I was that we didn't get the heavy rain that was forecast!!

"I would like to say thank you to so many people who helped me on the run up and on the day. Community spirit really came to the fore and the support I was given was tremendous.

"I would particularly like to say thank you to Wesley Hutton, Diane Smith and Andrew Latham of Cheshire East. Their advice, support, and hands on help, was invaluable and very welcome.

"I hope everyone enjoyed the day, particularly our lovely May Queen, Rianne and Helen McGregor (Miss Tean Galaxy England) who accompanied her."

Christine added "It was a great day, very well supported by local people as well as those from further afield, and to see so many happy smiling faces was wonderful, Really made the day very special. Thank you everyone."

We've had some really nice comments about today's May Fair. Thanks for all of them. It's what makes it all worthwhile for us. Many specially enjoyed the contribution from our local schools - the Ryleys Maypole dancers and Alderley Edge Primary. And it was great that so many people turned out on what was a chilly and overcast day.

There are other names, apart from those listed in Lisa's article, that deserve thanks too. Our many marshals who helped things run smoothly: Colin Mills and his Parade team, Martin Johnson, Dave and Kate Barraclough, the indefatigable Keith Lowe, (fresh from the massive task of last week's Music Festival) and many more. Thanks to you all. And thanks to our supporters from Cheshire East. We were critical of CE last year, but this year they have been fantastically supportive. Special thanks to Diane Smith and Wesley Hutton who helped us both before and on the day - well beyond the call of duty. See you next year!

My daughter Rianne (May Fair Queen) had the most amazing day, along with the rest of our family. We would like to say a big thank you to Christine Munro for her kind hearted support for Rianne, Kath Foster, Helen (Miss Galaxy of Cheshire) for supporting Rianne throughout the day and a big thank you to the May Fair committee for choosing Rianne.
