I attended the Alderley Edge Parish Council meeting on October 4th. Since then we have reported on a number of issues raised at the meeting including the bypass opening ceremony, an outline agreement having been reached for a new medical centre at the Festival Hall and time standing still in the village whilst the clock at Barclays Bank stopped working for 7 weeks.

The minutes of October's Parish Council Meeting are now available, click here to read about all the local issues covered; including Alderley United FC's use of Chorley Hall Lane playing field, the enforcement of weight restrictions in the village after the bypass has opened, the removal of redundant bus stop signs and a residents' parking paper which is being prepared by the Parish Plan Group.

The recurrence of cigarette ends being left on the pavement outside Chess Telecoms' premises on Heyes Lane was discussed again so after the meeting I raised the issue with my contacts at Chess.

Anne Binnie, Director of HR & Compliance at Chess Telecom, said "We sincerely regret that local people have been affected by this. Chess has always worked to ensure that the impact we have on the environment is a positive one. We have a Green Team who's role it is to drive environmental initiatives through the business, recycling is part of our culture, as is providing a safe, pleasant environment for our people. It is therefore very much contrary to our culture to find ourselves having a negative impact on our local environment.

"We have tried different solutions to this difficult problem which affects many businesses. We are unable to provide any sort of permanent structure for those who smoke in our business but we have recently purchased a portable cigarette butt receptacle and instructed our smokers that they are to ensure they use the same every time.

"I am checking the pavements every day and to date this seems to have resolved the problem. I am very hopeful that our neighbours will have no reason to complain about this again."

The Alderley Edge Parish Council meet once a month. All meetings are open to the public and are held in the Council Chamber at the Festival Hall. Dates and further details for the forthcoming meetings can be found in our events section.
