Time stood still in Alderley Edge

clock

As many of you would have noticed, time stood still in the village for 7 weeks whilst the clock at Barclays Bank had stopped working.

Councillor Mary Maczkowiak raised the issue at this week's Parish Council meeting, explaining she had received complaints from local residents that the village landmark on London Road, which has withstood two world wars, had been out of operation for nearly two months.

Last night Mary Maczkowiak told me; "The local jeweller in the village has always been responsible for winding up the clock at Barclays Bank. Henry Johnstone has been responsible for some time now but Masseys previously undertook this responsibility."

"The Bank premises are apparently owned by a Trust, which is also a listed building. The clock has not been working for some months now as Henry Johnstone was asked by the Trust to take out his own insurance in case of any accident, health and safety issues, and he is in dispute over none payment."

Mary added "I drove through the village today and several residents waved, shouting it's working today so I presume they mean the clock."

I checked this morning and the clock is definitely working again. The dispute over health and safety issues and non payment has thankfully been resolved and yesterday afternoon Chris Clarke, on behalf of his employer Henry Johnstone, reset the clock.
