The Sky's the limit for Alderley pupil

A Year 11 pupil at Alderley Edge School for Girls, Sophie Christie, has just returned from a trip to The Sky is the Limit school in Fort Portal, Uganda having raised funds to support the school and orphanage.

The Sky is the Limit school provides education for 350 children aged from 3 to 18 and was established in 1996 by a local health worker, Rose Mugenyi. Rose also runs the Noah's Ark, a children's centre which provides a safe and loving home to those children who are living with HIV or have lost family to the disease.

Sophie and her family spent many months raising £2000 for the cause which included a cake sale at the school in which Sophie's friends, namely Amelia Manley, Katie Clements, Ellie Bancroft and Becky Myers supported with the baking and selling of the cakes.

Sophie has finally had the opportunity to visit the school and see where funds have been spent. She commented "I was so shocked to see how little the children had and how poor the school facilities were. Hearing stories of their lives and how so many of them had been affected by the AIDs pandemic was very moving.

"The children I met were a real inspiration and were incredibly grateful for our help - it was great to see the books and new supplies that our fundraising had bought. I loved meeting all the children and listening to all their songs, we even spent time discussing their favourite football team, Manchester United."

Sophie has returned from her trip with a new perspective and has vowed to continue the fundraising activities to help more children at the school.

Mrs Susan Goff, Headmistress at the school added, "The girls participate in many fundraising activities throughout the year which help worthy causes both nationally and internationally. We are always pleased to hear about how we have helped those less fortunate and will support Sophie in her quest for further fundraising activities at AESG."
