Blooming success for 72nd allotment show

The 72nd Alderley Edge Allotments and Garden Society Show proved a big success at the weekend.

Just under 400 exhibits were registered for the annual event which attracted over 400 visitors to the Alderley Edge Methodist Church on Saturday, 31st August.

73 exhibitors entered classes which included flowers, fruit and vegetables, domestic crafts, cookery and children's categories such as floral art, cookery, miniature garden and drawing.

Mrs Ann Carter, past secretary of Alderley Edge Allotments and Gardens Society, presented the 21 cups and trophies. The main winners of which were Chris Yearsley from Alderley Edge, Duncan Ward from Congleton and Ruth Samuels from Alderley Edge who picked up the largest number of wins in the cookery classes.

John Sanderson, Chairman of Alderley Edge Allotments and Gardens Society, said "The main winners exhibited at a very high standard. We are lucky indeed to have them taking part in our village show. They could exhibit in much bigger shows and probably do well.

"The other classes - crafts, photography, art and children's classes - all had increased numbers exhibiting compared to previous years. It would be unfair to pick out particular exhibits because there were so very many good ones."

John added "The venue was excellent. It is now more spacious than it was due to refurbishment and removal of big heating pipes and radiators and also because the hall owners, The Methodist Church, went to the trouble of moving out all furniture and cupboards that could be moved. We were very pleased with the venue which must now be one of the favourite halls for community use in the area.

"The Methodist Church ran refreshments all day in a quiet and friendly corner of the Church. This was well used by many visitors to the show.

"Financially, we have moved on from the days when we were struggling to break even. We secured a number of sponsors and friends and received many raffle prizes from local businesses and from individuals. We therefore expect to make a small surplus which should secure the event for next year."
