Results of the 2013 Wilmslow Half Marathon

The winner of the 29th Wilmslow Half Marathon, which took place in the freezing cold with a biting wind this morning, was Joe Macdonald from Cardiff AAC with a time of 64 minutes and 54 seconds.

The winning time was exactly the same time as last year and just over three minutes off the course record of 61 minutes 52 seconds set by Isaac Macharia back in 2004.

Joe finished thirty seconds ahead of Patrick Martin of Stockport Harriers who completed the 13.1 mile course in a time of 65 minutes and 24 seconds. He was very closely followed by Ben Fish of Blackburn Harriers in 65 minutes and 27 seconds.

Julie Briscoe of Wakefield District Harriers won the women's race, recording a time of 75 minutes and 15 seconds. Julie was also the first woman to complete the Wilmslow Half Marathon in 2011.

Kelly Crickmore, from City of Chester Triathlon Club, was the second woman to finish in a time of 77 minutes and 3 seconds, she was closely followed by Louise Gardener from Lancaster & Morecambe AC in 77 minutes and 10 seconds.

For the third year running, the first male home for Wilmslow Running Club was Rob Downs, finishing in 18th place in a time of 73 minutes and 42 seconds. He narrowly held off the challenge of team mate Peter Speake who finished 20th in 73 minutes and 56 seconds. First lady home for the Wilmslow Club was Diane McVey, 7th lady and 133rd overall in a time of 84 minutes and 22 seconds.

This ever popular half marathon was run in temperatures of over 20 degrees 12 months ago but with 36 hours of snow forecast leading up to this year's event, the race organisers purchased 4,000 race blankets to prevent runners suffering from the cold once they had finished.

While the race reached the limit of 5000 in January, the conditions in some areas of the country made it difficult for many entrants to get to the race so numbers were down, with only 3679 completing the 13.1 miles around the leafy lanes of Wilmslow and Mobberley.

Runners have raised tens of thousands of pounds for individual charities, with the main beneficiary for 2013 being East Cheshire Hospice, which is based in Macclesfield and cares for adults suffering from life-limiting illnesses from which there is no cure.
