Promises to be a great night

St. Philip and St. James' launched a fundraising appeal last summer to raise money to carry out structural repairs to its landmark spire.

A recent inspection revealed that a substantial portion of the spire needs to be taken down because the metal rods, which hold the spire together, have corroded and need replacing.

The church needs to raise £150,000 to carry out these and related works to the Grade II* listed building, which was built in 1853 and designed by the famous Victorian architect JS Crowther.

To date they have raised just over £40,000 and their next big fundraiser is an Auction of Promises with dinner and dancing, which will take place at the Festival Hall on Saturday 16th February.

The auction is being organised by the Landmark Group, a group of prominent locals who have close links with St Philips and feel the fate of the Church building is a concern of the whole village, as it is an iconic village landmark.

Mandy Parr said "We are very excited by the Auction of Promises, we have lovely prizes, including visit to radio studio and lunch with Jeremy Vine, tour of the House of Lords and lunch with Lord Carey and week in a luxurious Tuscan villa."

Generous customers at The Botanist recently donated £1500 to the appeal - an optional £1 donation was added to all food bills during the month of December.

Mandy added "We are all extremely pleased and it is a huge boost to our Spire Appeal."

Tickets for the Auction of Promises are available from Ian Standen 01625 585034, priced £30 each.
