Following complaints from local residents that the cemetery was a "total disgrace", Alderley Edge Parish Council has been pushing for improvements for some time.
In May Cllrs Sue Joseph, Duncan Herald, Mary Maczkowiak and Melanie Connor carried out an inspection of the cemetery and produced a report detailing all the issues they would like addressing.
Since then parish councillors have held meetings with officers from Cheshire East Council and are pleased that improvements have been made and the cemetery is looking tidier.
Cllr Duncan Herald reported that following a meeting on Tuesday, 23rd October, a further list of improvements have been agreed.
He commented "We were very unhappy when we first inspected the cemetery, after complaints from the public. Now that some work has been completed and other work is to go ahead, I am very hopeful that the air of dilapidation will go and instead we shall have a peaceful and attractive cemetery."
Work carried out to date includes clearing the paths, hedge cutting, planters filled with plants and damaged bollards have been removed. Works currently being carried out include erecting fallen tombstones, filling in holes and fencing in a work area on the west side of the cemetery.
Cheshire East has also been approached to erect a new sign for the cemetery which is visible from the road, to repair the damaged footpath outside the cemetery and paint the windows at the front of the gatehouse.
Cllr Herald added "Once the works have been completed, there will be a great need for a Friends of Alderley Edge Cemetery group and it is hoped that Community Payback will get involved in cleaning the memorials and small plaques."
I have contacted Cheshire East Council again regarding the footpath on Ryley's Lane, opposite Chorley Hall Lane, which has still not been cleared. I will provide an update as soon as this information is received.
