Hockey: Seconds and thirds lead the way

Alderley Edge Men's second and third teams lead their respective divisions after victory this weekend.

The 2s had a tough match against a physical West Derby side, showing more creativity throughout and sharper finishing skills Alderley were deserved winners, 3-1.

Oliver Wildig continued his good early season form with two goals and Sam Baker added the third. They are now joint top of North West Division One following promotion last year.

The 3s stretched their lead at the top to two points with a solid 2-1 win over Knutsford. Alderley lead through Oli Kennon and Roland Alston, who also picked up Man of the Match, and despite conceding their first goal of the season with five minutes to go they managed to hold on for all three points.

The Fourth team dropped their first points of the season drawing 2-2 with Chester, but with a game in hand are just off top spot.

The 5s suffered their first defeat losing 3-1 to Knutsford 3s, whilst in the same division Alderley Edge 6th team were convincing 4-2 winners over Bramhall 3s.

In the North Premier division it was another tough day for the 1st team, with a depleted squad they were unable to get a foot hold in the game and struggled away to Formby. Alderley went a goal down from a penalty corner routine. Then mid way through the first half Alderley came to life and created pressure in the D and as Wildig's initial effort was blocked James Warburton was on hand to finish. Alderley took the lead when they won a penalty corner with virtually their next attack and Tim Pont easily beat the 'keeper.

Formby equalised with the last touch of the half as a drilled in cross was smartly deflected in at the far post.

The second half was frustrating for Alderley as they never quite clicked being beaten to the ball and unable to retain quality possession. Formby made the most of their opportunities showing good composure in the D ensuring they worked the ball to the unmarked player to present themselves with the simplest of finishes. They stretched the lead to 4-2 before Alderley showed any fleeting glimpses of getting back into the game, but it was not to be as Formby scored a fifth and then missed a penalty stroke.

To sum up Alderley's day Warburton neatly deflected in a cross for a fine goal only for the official to rule that the final whistle had sounded before the ball crossed the line. On Saturday Alderley host Whitley Bay.
