The organiser of Alderley Edge Farmer's Market is hoping to move the monthly event into the centre of the village.

Christine Munro, who set up the market 13 years ago, has approached Cheshire East Council to ask if she can move the market from its current location at the Festival Hall into the village centre.

Christine told me "The Festival Hall will be having building works starting soon and so I have been thinking we would have to relocate.

"I thought if we could move into the village down two of the side roads, Chapel Street and Brown Street, we would be more involved with the community and the market would be able to continue. It would be a shame after 13 years if it had to finish."

Christine has also asked if she can change the day from a Sunday to the second Saturday of each month and change the timings so the market runs from 10am to 2pm.

Christine added "I applied to the Council about four weeks ago to do this and they replied that it would have to be processed under a town and police clause.

"However, this week I had an email from Diane Smith, Town Centre Manager, to say 'The council is currently reviewing its position on giving consent to markets on the highway. I doubt if I will be able to give you a response in time for a market in May.' So I am waiting to hear further."

Christine Munro is also looking to offer free spaces each month to people who have set up a new business.

She explained "I am receiving a lot of enquiries from people who have been made redundant, or lost their jobs in other ways and are looking to start a mini business to raise money for themselves and their families. It breaks your heart to think of how difficult it is for so many people and how lucky we are to have what we have.

"I thought I would like to offer two people a month a space on the market to promote a new business. Just as I started with my hobby of making marmalade it might be an opportunity for them to show people what they do, whether it be food or crafts, anything, and I would promote them in my leaflets and on the website and hopefully it would give them a chance to make a fresh start and build something good and profitable."

If you are interested in having a stall at the Alderley Edge Farmer's Market email Christine Munro or call her on 01625 251753.
