Having raised over £25,000 for local charities, a Christmas tradition is returning to Alderley Edge for its 31st year but this time it has a new venue.

The annual Christmas Carol Evening is organised by Fay Wertheimer from the Carlton Ensemble and will feature a string quartet plus trumpet and trombone, all of whom are professional musicians who play free of charge.

Until it's closure the Carol Concert was hosted by John and Janet Wheeldon at No.15 Wine Bar. This year's concert will take place at the Drum & Monkey pub on Sunday December 18th. Guests can enjoy a festive meal first, which will be followed by the carol concert.

Fay, who plays the viola, will be joined by violinists Elaine Turnock, who has performed in 30 out the 31 concerts, and Heather Henshall from Alderley Edge who has performed on over 20 of the concerts.

They will be accompanied by Andrew Smith on trombone, who will be making his 11th appearance, Jeremy Sassoon on trumpet, who has performed in 25 of the concerts and cellist Lucy Sassoon who has recently returned from Australia and will make her first appearance with the Carlton Ensemble since 1993.

Fay Wertheimer said "The concert started by chance in 1981, using carols to transcend religion. It is wonderful for all ages but also has a serious meaning. Christmas is about giving.

"It is a privilege to do and a privilege that people still want to come."

Audience participation is encouraged and carol sheets will be provided on the night.

Tickets, available from the Jaqueline at the Drum & Monkey on 01625 584975, are priced £20, £10 of which will go to charities which are nominated by the attendees.

Fay added "As long as people put a donation in the charity box they are welcome to just come along for the concert if they prefer which will start about 9pm."
