Officers across Cheshire are taking part in an operation to target travelling criminals from outside the area, who use the counties road networks to travel to Cheshire and commit burglaries and car crime.
Western Area commander Chief Superintendent Craig Guildford said "Our intelligence picture suggests that criminals are often attracted by the perceived wealth of affluent Cheshire villages and towns.
"The purpose of this operation is to identify and target criminals from the surrounding areas of Merseyside, North Wales, Staffordshire and Manchester as they travel into Cheshire to commit crime.
"We will effectively deploy appropriate police resources and use up to date technology as well as more traditional policing methods as we do all we can to reduce the number of burglaries committed as the longer nights draw in."
The operation will adopt a number of policing tactics including gathering information on criminal movement, identifying individuals engaged in criminal activity and identifying their vehicles as well as responding to intelligence regarding imminent criminal activity.
Chief Superintendent Guildford added "Last year we ran a similar operation that saw excellent results and almost twenty arrests for a variety of offences. Across the Western area we have achieved a 28% decrease in recorded house burglaries in recent months, and 17% across Cheshire as a whole. We want to build on this success to help our residents to feel safe in the knowledge that we are out on the streets, identifying and apprehending those who commit serious and acquisitive crime."
Over the past twelve months, intelligence suggests that a significant amount of house burglaries in Cheshire are committed by offenders who live outside the Constabulary area. Proactive policing methods, coupled with focused intelligence handling has already brought about success in identifying some of the most prolific burglars who have targeted homes and businesses in the area.
