Edge sets the scene for radio drama

A five-part radio drama set in the beech woods of Alderley Edge will be broadcast on Woman's Hour next week.

'On The Edge' was recorded in the Wizard Tea Room and in the woods over two days last month.

The story unfolds over one long day in late summer when a body is discovered in a cave. The area is sealed off, all the witnesses are herded together in the Wizard Pub then one by one they are called to give their version of events to Detective Sergeant Lynch.

A jogger, some juveniles, a deranged farmer, and a geography teacher are rounded up and questioned. The course of events of that day changes the characters forever, forcing them to face some uncomfortable truths.

The radio drama is produced by Wilmslow resident Melanie Harris and written by BAFTA award-winning writer Neil McKay who also wrote Titanic, See No Evil and Mo, about the late Mo Mowlam, starring Julie Waters.

Neil McKay said "Alderley Edge has fascinated me for years, not only for its influence on the stories of Alan Garner, but also as a beauty spot that attracts a great diversity of people."

Melanie, 54, has been making radio drama for years, she spent ten years working at the BBC in Manchester and for the last three years she has been running her own independent production company called Sparklab Productions, based in Manchester.

She said "I always record my radio dramas on location; we get a better sound, it's more fun and inspires more commitment from all of us in the cast and crew to make the best piece we possibly can.

"I approached Wendy Scott in the Wizard Tea Rooms because we needed a base camp - somewhere to stay warm, dry and fed. Wendy was wonderful: she baked for us, had tea and coffee ready whenever we wanted, made sandwiches and soup. We used the information room next door to record the indoor scenes."

'On The Edge' is a Sparklab production for BBC Radio 4 and will be broadcast at 10.45am and 7.45pm each day from Monday 10th to Friday 14th October.
