Amazon parrot flies the nest

As the colder weather approaches local residents are becoming concerned about an Amazon parrot which has been making regular visits to their gardens.

The green parrot was first spotted on Marlborough Avenue in July and despite being reported to the police, RSPCA, Parrot Society and a couple of local vets nobody has come forward to claim him.

One local resident ended up having to cover his apple tree with a net as the parrot was raiding it, taking a couple of pecks of each apple before moving to the next one, but he still managed to get in.

Jo Murphy, whose garden has been regularly visited said "As you can see he is quite beautiful but goodness do we hear him squark! Anything from 5am in the morning, then he usually goes quiet until early evening.

"I attract him by clapping and whistling so he will do a couple of laps above our garden but I'm not sure how to go about catching him. Someone has suggested a cage in the garden with food for him which is what we will be doing as time goes on unless someone comes forward with a more effective idea!"

My sister lives in London where this type of parrot is quite commonly spotted in gardens and parks. Since the climate has warmed in recent years, their number has risen noticably. The lone one spotted in Alderley Edge must be a particularly tough bird, and not mind our cooler climate. I'm not sure if they migrate over the winter. If so, let's hope he comes back next summer and brings a few friends.

The RSPB thought this might be the case re being like the native parrots found down south, however, once a photo was forwarded to them we were told this particular chap is apparently more than likely an escapee.
