Women get back to hockey

The Back to Hockey programme, which was piloted at Alderley Edge Hockey Club last season and through the summer, is set to return.

This national campaign, backed by the England Hockey Board, is designed to attract over 15,000 women back to one of the UK's most popular Olympic sports. It will launch at hundreds of clubs and leisure centres across the country and return to Alderley Edge Hockey Club on Thursday 1st September.

The informal sessions are aimed at women who are looking for a great way to stay in shape and have some fun in a team environment, without needing to commit to regular training and competition schedules.

Kelvin Briggs , Secretary of Alderley Edge Hockey Club said "Anyone who's played hockey knows the sport provides a great workout – burning calories, improving cardiovascular fitness and toning those all important female targets of thighs and bottom.

"The Back to Hockey sessions will, we hope, prove incredibly popular with women looking for a fun, social way to get fit and stay in shape. Our experience last season was very positive."

Holly Woodford, Development Director at England Hockey Board, said "Back To Hockey has a focus on fun and fitness. Participants will get the chance to not only refresh their skills, but also discover new ones, all through bite sized games. Back to Hockey will provide all the physical benefits of the game's full format, without the pressure of having to perform for team selection.

"The new Back to Hockey sessions provide a superb opportunity for women in the Alderley Edge and Wilmslow area to get involved in the sport in a format that suits women's busy lives."

Back to Hockey starts again on Thursday 1st September, 7.00pm - 8.00 pm at Wilmslow High School and will move to the new pitch at The Edge Hockey Centre on The Ryleys playing field when the pitch is finished in early October.

Really pleased to have had two enquiries within minutes of this story being posted. Would just like to add..... one of key reasons behind the success of 'Mums Back To Hockey' at last seasons sessions was the coaching and leadership delivered by Sarah Hardman. A super volunteer, inspiring Coach and hockey enthusiast , Sarah always made it fun and highly enjoyable. More fun and games to come this season, look forward to more local Ladies giving it a try!

As someone who has already participated in this Mums back to Hockey, I can confirm it is just great fun - and it's been a long time since I played hockey!

Glad you are enjoying it Teresa, the club have had a great response to Back to Hockey, with a good number of new Lady recruits at the first new season session this week. More expected next week. Not long now before the new pitch, The Edge will be open on the Ryleys playing field on the A34 . Hockey from 7-8pm, for now at Wilmslow High School.
