London Road gets a taste of Christmas

If you were in Alderley Edge last night you will have noticed that all the Christmas lights were on and London Road looked very pretty.

As we walked down the village the final set of new lights were being installed in the tree outside the library.

The guys fitting them explained that the old lights had been in place for 5 years so for health and safety reasons they had to be replaced. They had spent the past two weeks putting new lights in the trees along London Road, including two additional trees outside the Village Cafe and Village Butchers.

Several people we spoke to last night commented how lovely the lights looked and asked if they could be kept on all year. They are now turned off though until the light switch on takes place in November.

One of the guys kindly took these pictures for me from up in the cherry picker, providing a different perspective on London Road.

I spoke with Paul Tomlinson this week about the Christmas lights.

Whilst Paul is no longer a Parish Councillor he did organise the refurbishment of the Christmas lights.

Paul confirmed "The lights in the trees have to be de-installed and reinstalled every three years, to prevent tree damage and bring them closer to the canopy of the tree. We had left them in for four years so this exercise was overdue.

"Lite, the supplier of the lights have supplied many new lights under warranty to replace ones not fixable due to water ingress, so this year's display should be the same if not better than the original first install.

"We haven't bought any new lights this year, because of finance, however we have removed the lights from near the railway bridge to trees in the village. We will still have gaps, trees with no lights, we'd like every tree to be lit."

The issue of Christmas lights was raised at the Parish Council meeting on Monday, 18th July, when Councillor Mike Williamson asked his fellow councillors "Do we wish to earmark some funds to fill the gaps?"

He added "It may be worth us approaching businesses about the Christmas lights.

"If there is anything practical we can do to improve the display we should. Yvonne Wrinch did the fundraising 5 years ago so its time to revisit and go back to the businesses about the Christmas lights - £15,000 was donated initially and our spend was about £45,000."
