New group launched for young walkers

A local walking group is launching a new club aimed exclusively at 18 to 40 year olds.

TRAX, is designed for adventurous people who want to enjoy the great outdoors in East Cheshire and the surrounding countryside, without being associated with the "grey beards and bobble hats" of more senior ramblers.

TRAX is the idea of East Cheshire Ramblers' membership secretary, Brian Griffiths, 60, who said, "While many young people appreciate the health benefits and sociable aspects of organised walking, we recognise that, quite naturally, they may not want to be identified with those of us in the established Ramblers' Association because we are the wrong peer group.

"We will willingly help them design and create their own dedicated club with a programme of walks and social activities. They are welcome to draw on our experience and resources as they choose but that is entirely up to them because it will be their club – not ours."

An inaugural 8.5 mile walk will be held on Saturday, April 9th, leaving promptly at 10 a.m. from outside the Ranger station at Derbyshire Bridge, grid reference SK 017 716. Turn first left after the Cat & Fiddle on the Macclesfield to Buxton road. Come suitably equipped with walking boots and waterproofs and bring a packed lunch. Prospective members are welcome to attend on a trial basis.

Formed in 1973, East Cheshire Ramblers is one of the nation's largest organised walking groups belonging to the national Ramblers' Association with some 800 members in an area bounded by Macclesfield, Wilmslow, Altrincham, Bramhall and Poynton.
