Hockey: Alderley retain top spot

Alderley Edge confirmed top spot in North Division One with victory at fellow promotion hopefuls Timperley. Going into the game Alderley held a 3 point lead but had played an extra game.

The game was played at high tempo with both sides showing why they were at the top of the table. Timperley exerted most of the early pressure with Scarsbrook having to clear off the line and Riley having to make a series of telling saves. However, Alderley always looked dangerous on the counter attack.

Ben Badger showed no signs of rustiness on his return to action following concussion, and Barnes and Williams battled hard in midfield.

Timperley had an effort disallowed when a corner strike was heading over the backboard and from virtually the next attack Alderley won a corner of their own and Khalid Sawas was on hand to deflect home the opening goal.

The second half was again a tight contest, with Chris Baker-Brian and Sawas in great form at the heart of the Alderley back line. Timperley were unable to get any meaningful attempts on goal and Alderley were creating chances at the other end, with Warburton and Gregory going close. Alderley were getting crosses into the D but could not apply the finishing touch.

Timperley’s frustration began to boil over and ill discipline cost them the chance of getting back into the game, first they gave away a penalty stroke, which after a short delay, James McPherson coolly tucked away to cap a fine performance. Then Timperley had 3 men sent to the sin bin in quick succession. Meaning Alderley were able to see out the rest of the game, squandering a couple of golden opportunities to put a gloss finish on a professional performance. Leaving as 2-0 winners.

The Ladies first team beat local rivals Wilmslow 1-0 and just need to win their next game to secure promotion and the title with 4 games in hand.

The ladies 2s need to win any of one their last four games to be crowned champions following their 15-1 victory over Timperley.

With the Men’s 2s, 4s and 5s plus the Ladies 3s and 4s all very much in contention for promotion, things are certainly looking up for Hockey at Alderley Edge.
