Alderley Edge School for Girls have topped the recently published secondary schools league tables, achieving the top A level results in Cheshire East and the second best GCSE's results last year.

The girls from AESG achieved an average A level score per student of 966 which was the highest in Cheshire East and 94% of students achieved five or more A*-C grades in GCSE including English and Maths, The King's School in Macclesfield was the only school in Cheshire East to achieve a higher result with 99% gaining five or more A*-C grades in GCSE including English and maths. This compares very favourably with both the national average of 53.4% and the Cheshire East average of 62.5%.

Mrs Sue Goff, Headmistress at AESG said "We are delighted with our positioning in the Cheshire East league tables. Our girls produce excellent results year on year so it is a credit to their hard work that we have achieved the top place for A Level results and only narrowly missed out on the top spot for GCSE results.

"Our well-balanced approach is based on respect for hard work across a wide range of subjects, whilst developing the confidence and life skills of our girls to support them in the wider world".

The tables compare local authorities both regionally and nationally and when looking at the amount of students achieving five or more A*-C grades, including English and maths, Cheshire East has strengthened its position, moving from fourth to second amongst its statistical neighbours – those authorities with a similar profile in terms of demographics, size and areas of deprivation, for example.

National tables look at all 151 local authorities, here Cheshire East has improved from 26th to 15th.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said: "The GCSE results achieved by our students last year were a splendid achievement. It is a testament to their hard work and the efforts of all the school staff that helped them prepare.

"Our strong showing in these performance tables indicate that we are doing things correctly, and giving our students the best possible preparation for entering further education, or the world of work."
