Caving club explorers detect leak beneath village church

Derbyshire Caving Club came to the rescue last week when they climbed below St Philip Church to sove the problem of a leaking pipe.

Having noticed the church had been using lots of water, Committee member Martin Sinker asked members of the Derbyshire Caving Club to investigate whether they had a leaking pipe under the floor boards - given it is quite a tight area with two small trap doors.

Armed with helmets, head torches and knee pads Steve Mills and Nigel Hoyland from Derbyshire Caving Club went to have a look last week.

They set off down trap door to explore under the floor of the entire church, investigating nooks and crannies. Their mission was accomplished when they found a leaking pipe under the choir stalls, which now needs fixing.

Mandy Parr said "AddING to their adventures they were also were very startled to find Hissing Sid! (ask Rev'd Robin), the allusive snake that protects the crypt and Stephen was pleased to find iron gates - part of the Legend of the Edge mentions iron gates in a cutting to the north of the railway, and there they are under the church."
