A property development company plans to redevelop the former Barclays Bank on London Road have been refused.
Abode Residencies, which provides student accommodation, purchased the distinctive property, which has been vacant since 2022, to set up its headquarters.
The plans included building an extension to the rear of the three-storey grade II-listed building to accommodate the stairs.
However, Cheshire East Council has refused planning permission on the grounds that the proposals include extensions and alterations that are considered harmful to the special character of the listed building by virtue of the scale and design and prominence of the proposed extension and dormer.
The Council also considered that there are insufficient public benefits to outweigh the substantial harm of the listed building.
Additionally, they stated that the proposals conflict with Cheshire East Local Plan and Alderley Edge Neighbourhood Plan.
The plans can be viewed on the Cheshire East Planning Portal by searching fro planning reference 24/3110M.
