Disrectful thieves left the Alderley Edge cenotaph damaged when stealing planters earlier this month.
Around 10.30pm on Friday, 16th August Councillor Craig Browne said "I challenged two men who appeared to be stealing stone planters from the cenotaph in Alderley Edge. They claimed to be working on behalf of Manchester City Council, so I reminded them they were in Cheshire East Council area and that given they were unable to provide me with any identification, I called the police. At this point they drove off in a navy Toyota pickup, registration G306 SKL."
The thieves then returned overnight and took every stone planter, causing damage to the Cenotaph in the process.
Councillor Craig Browne added "So upsetting to see a memorial to those who gave their lives in battle disrespected in such circumstances. Clearly some individuals have no respect. Hopefully Cheshire Police are going to follow up on this; I was an eyewitness and have given them all the evidence they need to take action."
A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said today (Wednesday, 28th August) "At around 10.43pm on Friday 16 August, police were called to reports of suspicious activity at the Cenotaph in Church Lane, Alderley Edge.
"It was reported that unknown individuals were believed to be stealing stones from the Cenotaph.
Enquiries are ongoing. If anyone has any information, please contact Cheshire Police on 101 or online, quoting IML-1896742."
