Double celebration for bypass construction

The on-going construction of the Alderley Edge bypass has resulted in two prestigious awards for Cheshire East Council (CEC) and their contractors, Birse Civils.

Last month, the site team won Gold at the Considerate Constructors Scheme Awards (CCS) and North West Transportation Project of the Year at the Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation Awards (CIHT).

At the CCS Awards, officials said the Alderley Edge bypass project had consistently scored highly in all areas. It was deemed to be considerate, accountable, clean, respectful, responsible, environmentally aware, safe and a good neighbour.

The 52 million pound project, according to CCS, is one of just 63 out of 7700 sites to have achieved Gold status.

CIHT gave their award to the project because of general good practice, partnership working and technical innovation.

Cheshire East Councillor, Jamie Macrae, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Prosperity said: “This a great achievement for all concerned. I would like to thank Birse Civils for their consistently high standard of working and for the successful partnership which has been forged between them and CEC.

Commenting on the current construction of the bypass, Councillor Macrae, added: “The work is moving along very quickly now. At this stage I am confident that the installation will remain on budget and on-time. Once completed, this long-awaited bypass will be an essential commuter route around Alderley Edge and Nether Alderley. I am aware that the work has caused an inconvenience to some drivers and local residents and I thank them for their continued patience.”

Dave Lowiss, Regional Managing Director, Birse Civils Limited “The awards recognise the investment by the entire site team to deliver a very successful scheme. The CIHT Award recognises the innovation and engineering excellence, whilst the CCS Award represents the significant stakeholder and local community engagement. Cheshire East Council’s support has been tremendous on this front and at a level not normally enjoyed by a contractor.”
