Drivers are advised that a new speed limit will be introduced next month on the A34 close to Kingsway School in Cheadle.
Following a safety review that took place in early 2025, experts recommended that a section of the road, from Broadway to the Cheadle Royal junction, close to both Kingsway School campuses, be lowered from 50mph to 40mph in both directions to improve safety for road users including motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
The speed limit will be changed from mid-August.
Work is also currently being delivered to build a sustainable travel route being built as part of the £33m A34 corridor improvements. These works include a designated walking and cycling route built along the stretch of the A34 where the new speed limit is being brought in.
Cllr Grace Baynham, Cabinet Member for Parks, Highways and Transport Services, said: "Reducing the speed limit on this stretch of the A34 from 50mph to 40mph is a crucial step in improving safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
"Lower speeds reduce the risk and severity of accidents, making our roads safer for everyone.
"Additionally, by encouraging smoother traffic flow, this change will help to improve air quality in the area, supporting Stockport's wider commitment to tackling air pollution and promoting healthier communities.
"We want to ensure that our roads are not only efficient but also safe and environmentally responsible for residents and commuters alike."
As part of the change, the council will install electronic speed warning signs highlighting the new speed limit plus new signs on the northbound carriageway bridge.
As motorists make their way over the M60, Manchester City Council has recently changed the speed limit on Kingsway to 30mph as motorists travel over the city boundary.
