Alderley seconds takes centre stage as Covid hits first team fixture

6th June

Alderley Edge Second XI played the main fixture of the weekend at Moss Lane on Saturday as Covid precautions caused the First XI fixture at Hyde to be postponed and heavy rain accounted for the Third XI fixture on Sunday.

Winning the toss and bowling first Hyde controlled matters in the early stages amassing 85 for their opening stand with Rob Brierley top scoring with 63. Two wickets from Archie Vaughan helped to peg back Hyde's middle order as the visitors made their way to 150-4 with Jason Ebrell hitting 39 from number 5 before a spell of 4-44 from Ollie Pooler swept away the lower order to leave them on 225-8 from their 45 overs.

In reply Alderley started brightly with an opening partnership of 70 between Dil Yahathugoda (24) and Shabz Qasim (40) followed up by 45 from number 4 Archie Vaughan which took Alderley past the 100 run mark. Haider Hussain's spell of 4-45, including the dismissals of Qasim and Vaughan, swung the momentum back in Hyde's favour with Alderley's middle order unable to make an impact.

A fighting 48 from skipper Jonny Usher at number 8 gave Alderley a glimmer of hope but when he was dismissed Hyde were able to close out the game with the hosts finishing on 192-9 to take 8 points from the match to Hyde's 15.
