Investigations ongoing following spate of lock-snapping burglaries

Detectives are investigating a spate of burglaries across East Cheshire including Wilmslow where thieves have gained access to a number of properties by snapping locks.

Cheshire Police have recently charged two men from Bolton in relation to 21 burglaries which were committed between September 2019 and April 2021 in Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, Mobberley, Prestbury, and Knutsford.

However, enquiries are continuing to identify other suspects and operations are ongoing to deter thieves.

One local resident who contacted wilmslow.co.uk was recently burgled and both of their cars were stolen.

She said "We live in south Wilmslow. They gained access by snapping the locks on our french doors. We have since learnt there are burglaries happening in Wilmslow nearly every week where access is gained in the same way."

She added "I'm thoroughly sick of these awful people coming to our beautiful town and targeting hard working people."

DC Andy Street said: "I want to reassure residents that we are making every effort to identify those responsible so we can put them before the courts, and officers from other departments are helping us to carry out a number of operations to deter criminals from coming to Cheshire.

"In relation to lock snapping, this is something that has been seen nationally and there are measures you can take to prevent this including using anti-snap locks.

"You can also reduce the risk by keeping valuable items, including car keys, out of sight, keeping windows and doors locked and adding security systems such as alarms and CCTV.

"It's also important to report suspicious activity and anything that seems out of place so that together we can prevent crime and deter criminals from coming to Cheshire."
