Cricket: Alderley stumped by the weather at Hyde

After COVID precautions had already forced two fixtures between the two sides to be postponed this summer, Alderley Edge's First XI did finally manage to take the field against Hyde on Saturday but were left frustrated as rain forced the match to be abandoned at the half way stage.

Winning the toss and bowling first, Charlie Reid's men made good use of the green surface at Werneth Low to restrict the home side to 136-9 off their 45 overs with David Fitsimmons the only man to get a real grip of conditions for Hyde with a patient knock of 47. Reid claimed 4-38 as the pick of Alderley's bowlers with Andrew Windle taking a miserly 2-16 off his 9 overs. In a disappointing end to the afternoon, unexpected rain then began to fall during the tea interval which never subsided and left both captains to shake hands and split the points.

In the reverse fixture at Moss Lane, Alderley's Second XI lost by 5 wickets in dramatic fashion with the winning runs being struck off the final ball of the game. After losing the toss and being asked to bat after some early afternoon rain, Alderley's openers put on a mammoth 135 run stand for the first wicket, finally broken when Alan Day departed for an excellent 82. His opening partner, Henry Stevinson, finished unbeaten on 53 as the hosts posted 153-4 from their 35 overs.

Hyde opener David Fisher's 68 got the visitors off to a good start in their chase and 39 from keeper Thomas Jackson ensured they remained in contention with an over to go, but it was number 6 James Chew whole stole the limelight in hitting the required six runs off the final ball of the game to seal a stunning win for Hyde.

On Sunday Alderley's Third XI continued their recent good form with a 21 run win over Toft at Moss Lane. Winning the toss the hosts decided to bat first posting 159-5 from their 40 overs on the back of an unbeaten 71 from opener Archie Vaughan and 44 from Tejas Rao. Toft started brightly in the second innings but lost 4 wickets with the score stuck on 99 amidst a devastating spell of 4-22 from skipper Ashray Bhamidipati leaving the visitors' lower order with too much to do and Alderley running out comfortable winners.
