Cricket: Alderley edged out in nail-biter at Timperley

11th May 2019 2

Alderley Edge First XI fell to their second loss of the season, the margin of victory being just one wicket for the home side Timperely.

On a greenish wicket at Stockport Road, home skipper Nathan Brown won the toss and asked Alderley to bat first. Timperley's seam attack made quick work of removing the visitor's top order racing to 38-4 with Chris Page and Scott Johnson taking two wickets apiece. A patient 66 not out from 119 deliveries by number 5 Sam Perry led the fightback for Alderley with Adam Worrall hitting 21 from number 6 and number 10 Jake Hill supporting Perry well scoring 17 in a partnership of 42 taking the visitors past the 150 mark. Alderley were eventually bowled out for 170, Scott Johnson leading the Timperely attack in finishing with 4-46, Chris Page taking 2-20 and Furqan Shafiq claiming 2-5.

Cheshire opening batsman Furquan Shafiq started the Timperely reply at a quick pace, carrying the hosts to an opening stand of 79 before being bowled by Charlie Reid for 47 off 59 balls (7x4, 1x6). Reid quickly followed up with the wicket of Abishek Kulkarni for 32 and Ed Foster had the dangerous Brooke Guest caught behind for 2 as the hosts slumped to 83-3. Foster claimed a further 2 middle-order wickets in another good outing with the ball as Alderley continued their fightback and when Reid claimed the key wicket of Grant Hodnett with Timperley on 123-5 the game was well and truly in the balance. Number 7 Ed Galley showed good composure to slowly manoeuvre the hosts towards their target. Alderley had one final trick up their sleeve when skipper Adam Worrall threw Alan Day the ball who responded taking the wickets of Timperely's number 9 and 10 in two balls with one run still required for victory and Alderley now needing just one wicket for a tie. Galley however completed victory for the hosts hitting a straight drive off the returning Jake Hill to complete victory by one wicket finishing on 26 not out. Charlie Reid finished with 4-66 and Foster 3-39 in a valiant effort with the ball for Alderley who took 8 points from the encounter to Timperley's 25.

In Second XI action at Moss Lane, Alderley endured another tough afternoon against Upton. Losing the toss, the hosts were asked to bat first and with 3 of the top 5 dismissed without scoring were quickly in dire straits at 33-5. A swashbuckling 61 from number 6 Dan Fesmer, including several lusty blows for 6, helped Alderley to a modicum of respectability setting a total of 121 from 38 overs. Upton's Tommy Maguire was the pick of the visitor's attack claiming 5-32. Upton didn't have things all their own way in the resulting chase, being reduced to 19-3 in the early stages. A solid knock of 26 from number 4 Darren Warburton steadied things for Upton and a superb 56 not out from Tom Woods took the visitors home for the loss of 4 wickets, Emma Lamb claiming 3-32 for Alderley.
