Hockey: Edge inspired by the Vulcan flypast

Alderley Edge Hockey Club enjoyed some super wins this weekend. The highlights being a 6-1 home win in the Northern Premier League at for the Men's 1st team over previously undefeated Leeds HC and a real cruise for the Women's 1st team beating local rivals Bowdon 8-0.

The afternoon also saw the flypast of a Vulcan bomber that maybe inspired the team efforts.

The Men's 1st team started brightly at The Edge with Andy Power scoring in the early minutes following up a rebound at a penalty corner. Leeds countered immediately with an open play equaliser and looked menacing up to half time. Edge always looked dangerous on the break with the dynamic pace of the Gregory brothers always causing the Leeds defence problems. Digger Wildig made it two for Alderley just before half time.

In the second half, the aerial ball threat posed by Andy Power caused all sorts of problems for a tiring Leeds defence. With Greg Vickers and Ciaran Sanders controlling midfield and the Edge defence dominating the Leeds forwards, further goals came from Si Parker, Sam Gregory, Greg Vickers and a penalty corner drag flick from Andy Power. Alderley now rise to third in the table.

The Women's Ist team cemented their place at the top of league making it four straight wins with a 8-0 demolition of Bowdon. Following on from last weeks 3-1 away win at Wilmslow, Edge were in total control with 2 first half goals and 6 more in the second half.

That makes it 22 goals scored and just 3 conceded, three points clear and very much on the promotion trail.
