Balloon spire raises funds for church appeal

A spire of balloons was located on London Road yesterday helping to raise money towards the repair of an Alderley Edge landmark.

Mitch Gilbert from Rainbow Balloons created the balloon spire and Mr Simms Olde Sweet Shoppe hosted the charity event which raised £150 for the St Philips and St James Church spire appeal.

Customers and passers-by were invited to purchase a balloon for £1, which they then popped to find the raffle ticket which had been placed inside.

All the raffle tickets were entered into a draw and Owain Davies was the lucky winner of a large jar of pick n mix sweets.

The Spire Appeal was launched last year to raise £150,000 which is required to carry out essential restoration works to the Grade II* listed building, which was built in 1853 to the design of the prominent Manchester architect J.S.Crowther. So far over £70,000 has been raised for the appeal.
