A grandfather from Alderley Edge will be making his first parachute jump this month in support of a local landmark.
Rod Hogarth will be taking off from Cark airfield near Grange over Sands on Sunday, 19th May, and hoping to descend safely from 3000 feet.
He will be raising funds for the St Philip's and St James' Spire Appeal which was launched last summer to ensure that the landmark spire is protected for future generations.
The Grade II* listed building, which was built in 1853 to the design of the prominent Manchester architect J.S.Crowther, is in need of essential restorations works.
The metal rods which hold the spire together have corroded and need replacing, this will require taking down a substantial proportion of the spire and then building it back up - this and associated works will cost £150,000.
If the church is unable to raise these funds, then there may be no option but to take down the spire and cap it off, potentially losing forever an important village landmark.
Speaking about his forthcoming parachute jump, Rod said "I am really looking forward to it as everyone I've spoken to who has done one says it is an experience of a lifetime – but hopefully not my last !"

Rod would like any money promised to be doubled if he doesn't make it!
