St. Philip and St. James' organised a fun packed evening to raise money to carry out structural repairs to its landmark spire.

An Auction of Promises with dinner and dancing, took place at the Festival Hall on Saturday, 16th February, attended by over 200 guests.

The highlight of the evening was the silent auction, which was organised by the Landmark Group and saw guests out bid one another for the top prize of a week in a Tuscany Villa, encouraged by local QC Jim Pickup who was auctioneer for the evening.

Ernie Rae, the Master of Ceremonies, said "There was a fun atmosphere and everyone was enjoying themselves, the Landmark committee were thrilled with the support from the village and the wider community in making the evening memorable."

Organiser Mandy Parr added "Early indications are the evening raised close to £14,000 bringing the total so far raised to £55,000 which is just over third of the appeal.

"We are continually surprised at peoples generosity and wish to thank everyone for their support."

St. Philip and St. James' launched their fundraising appeal last summer, following an inspection which revealed that a substantial portion of the spire needs to be taken down because the metal rods need replacing.

The church needs to raise £150,000 to carry out these and related works to the Grade II* listed building, which was built in 1853 and designed by the famous Victorian architect JS Crowther.
