Forgotten treasure could help save iconic landmark

St. Philip and St. James' launched a fundraising appeal in the summer to raise money to repair its landmark spire.

A recent inspection revealed that a substantial portion of the spire needs to be taken down because the metal rods, which hold the spire together, have corroded and need replacing.

The church needs to raise £150,000 to carry out these and related works to the Grade II* listed building, which was built in 1853.

To date they have raised just over £28,000, which is a great start for their appeal but they have still have a long way to go. To help boost the funds they have organised a Valuation Day in conjunction with Peter Ashburner from Frank Marshalls.

People are invited to bring down any favourite or forgotten treasurers to the church and have them valued. A fee of £2 will be charged per item valued, and if any item is donated to the Spire fund the fee will be waived and then sold by Peter in future auctions.

The Valuation Day will be held on Saturday 10th November from 11am until 3.30pm and is open to everyone. Light refreshments will be available as well as organ music and tours around the church.
