Speed indicator device installed in Alderley

SAM_0032

Roads in Alderley Edge will benefit from a recently purchased Speed Indicator Device (SID) that will be deployed to problem areas.

Alderley Edge Parish Council agreed to purchase the device after a discussion I had with them regarding the benefits this would bring to the village in relation to speeding.

The device is able to flash speeds and record the data for reviewing purposes. As well as traffic calming, this device will allow us to see where we have real problems. The device can be secured to existing street posts.

The SID is currently in situ on Brook Lane with a view to being randomly sited in other areas that have already been observed as problematic.

If anyone in the Alderley Edge community would be interested in setting up speed watch schemes please contact me, PCSO Jim Newns on 07948522130.

In every other village in the locality, the Parish Council has set up the Speed Watch Scheme. Some have been in place for approaching 10 years. I wonder why Alderley Edge PC are so far behind the game on this and why Jim is left pleading for someone else in the Community to set one up ?

As I always point out about these SIDs - the data they produce is flawed because most speeders slow down when they see a SID flash their speed. As a result, they substantially under-record speeding and become an excuse not to do anything about problem areas.

I think this is a great idea and I would like to see this situated on the main Wilmslow Road where I live near the Merlin pub. This stretch of road coming off the roundabout is now a 30mph speed limit although drivers continue to treat it as a 40mph limit as it once was. I think these devices do work even if drivers are just slowing down when they see them.

Please consider this road as one of the locations if you would Jim in order to remind people that this road is now a 30mph and not a 40mph zone!

The Mottram end of Chapel Road would surprise many of you. Some drivers think its a 60mph zone! I'm always worried about my children on this end of the street.

The data will be collected per area and the SID will be moved around so that we collect a good sample from all the roads in the village.

Do cars slow down when they see this device? No, they do not. If the speed limit was adjusted to a tolerance of 35mph at this point, and if motorists exceeding that tolerance were fined £80, then the first week would have yielded £100,000.

Speeds of 76 (in a 30 zone) and many, many over 60. Of course there were cars just under 30, but 1,250 cars over 35mph confirms local perception of extravagant speeds.

This needs to be further up on Brook Lane, i live on Brook Lane and its opposite the Golf course that has the greatest problem. people drive well in excess of 50mph from between the roundabout and loch fyne , something needs to be done before one of these loonatiics kills somebody, my dog has already been a victim of a hit and run , next time it will be a child. The police need to get a grip and do something about it !!!

Mr Keegan, you forgot about the Mottram end of Chapel Road.

Tom/Mark,

There will be multiple locations on each road chosen. But I did forget about Chapel Road!

The first stages were to buy the device and collect data. Then we will have to devise deterrents.

I agree with Kaz..... Heyes Lane is a rat run. Any measures to stop this would be most welcome.
