Section of A34 to close for 5 days

A two-mile section of the A34 is to close for five days for resurfacing work.

The road will close between Monk's Heath crossroads and Siddington crossroads, near Congleton, from Monday, March 19th, to Friday March 23rd.

This will allow for two sections of the A34, Monk's Heath crossroads to Bagbrook Farm and Mill Lane to Siddington Parish Hall, to be resurfaced at a cost £155,000.

Traffic will be diverted between Congleton and Macclesfield via the A536 onto the B5088 Oxford Road and then along the A537 to Monk's Heath crossroads. The diversion will be signed from the A34/A536 gyratory at Congleton to divert HGV's on to a suitably classified road (A536).

Road closure warning signs on the A34 showing the sections of carriageway to be closed have been in place since last week to give motorists advance warning of the works and time to plan an alternative route.

A spokesman for Cheshire East Council said: "The road has deteriorated to the point where resurfacing for these sections of carriageway is essential for the safety of road users.

"We apologise in advance for the disruption this will cause people, but they will quickly benefit from having a greatly-improved road surface once the work is complete.

"Road deterioration isn't a new problem and it is one that is being experienced across the country thanks to decades of underinvestment in our roads. The severe winter weather over the past few years has exacerbated the problem.

"But we are taking steps to address this issue. During 2011 Cheshire East Council spent more than £9m repairing faults and improving Cheshire East's highways.

"We have improved ways of reporting road surface problems through our website, where people can see repairs scheduled and completed that day. We would urge people to keep reporting potholes and defects. We try to ensure that those located on higher speed roads are dealt with first and continue to try to deal with issues as quickly as we can with repairs."

The roads in and around Alderley Edge are a laughingstock. My in-laws regularly visit from Somerset and they always laugh at the supposed high profile location and the fact even with countless multi-million pound houses we have the worst roads in the country. It's not difficult to see that patching up the potholes is a temporary sticking plaster where the roads actually need proper resurfacing like the A34 is getting. I hope it improves soon as the area is starting to feel distinctly run down.
