Time stands still for historic clock

As some of you will have noticed, time has stood still at Alderley Edge Methodist Church for a couple of weeks as the historic clock has stopped working.

The clock was restored last year as part of the £275,000 project to repair the church spire and tower, which had both become victims of serious corrosion.

Built in 1863 the clock and bell are original features of the building and both are highly unusual pieces - the clock is one of three in the country and the bell is one of only two cast iron bells in the UK.

Having been restored in Cumbria the clock fitters re-installed the clock faces in June and in November the clock and bell rang out the time for Alderley Edge residents once more.

Rev Ben Clowes explained "Since the refurbishment last year the clock has had an intermittent problem which means it suddenly stops and needs to be restarted by hand."

The clock stopped again about two weeks ago and has been reported to the clock repairers. They are due to attend the site later this week to investigate and repair if necessary.
