Cheshire East primary schools among the best in the country

Primary school pupils in Cheshire East have proved they are among the best in the country after this year's SAT results were published.

League tables published by the Department for Education show Cheshire East is the joint fourth best performing region in the country and joint second in the North West.

The percentage of pupils achieving level 4+ in both English and maths in Cheshire East is 81% this year, which is a one per cent improvement on 2009/2010.

Of the 43 pupils at Alderley Edge Community Primary School who were eligible to take these tests, 83% achieved level 4 in both English and maths, with 90% achieving level 4 in English and 83% achieving level 4 in maths, which is the standard that most pupils this age are expected to achieve.

Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and family services, said: "The Key Stage 2 figure of 81 per cent compares to a national figure of 74 per cent, showing Cheshire East schools are performing well above the national average. Across the North West, Cheshire East is positioned joint second out of 23 authorities for this key indicator."

"It is also important to point out that rates of pupil progress are also improving. The expected two levels of progress in English and maths are up by one per cent to 88 per cent and 87 per cent respectively.

Meanwhile, 28% of pupils in Cheshire East are achieving Level 5+ in both English and maths, which is the same as last year and compares to 21% nationally.
