Police in Cheshire say too many drivers are still ignoring the dangers of drink driving.

During a month long campaign to combat drink and drug driving two people were arrested in Alderley Edge for drink driving and seven were arrested in Wilmslow.

Across Cheshire 153 people were arrested after failing a breath test, compared with 119 arrested for the same period last year, and the number of people arrested for driving whilst unfit due to drugs was more than double last year's figure. There were nine arrests during June 2011 compared with four in the same period in 2010.

Assistant Chief Constable Phil Thompson commented: "As predicted following the statistics from the first 2 weeks of the campaign the number of people arrested has substantially increased.

"These people will face the prospect of losing their licences, incurring a criminal record and even a prison sentence. At the very least they will be looking at largely increased insurance costs and a heavy fine.

"People are simply not getting the message that drink drivers will get caught and will be prosecuted. Choosing to drink and drive poses a great threat to yourself and others.

"The message is very clear, if you are going to have a drink, don't get behind the wheel, don't take the risk.

"The number of arrests is the highest for the past 3 years, 6% more arrests have been made in comparison to the same period last year it is of great concern that more people are drinking and driving. The number of arrests for drug driving is also at its highest compared with the previous 2 years.

Cheshire Police is continuing to crack down on drink and drug drivers.

In line with the increase in the number of people arrested for drink and drug driving Cheshire Police is re-launching The Good, The Bad and The Ugly campaign over the summer and during September.

The campaign will illustrate the dangers of drink driving as well as the general the risks of excessive alcohol consumption. It will encompass various aspects of alcohol related problems such as summer bbq's, underage drinking and vulnerability, as well as drink driving.

People who are aware of persistent drink-drivers are urged to report them on the Cheshire Police Information line; 0845 458 0000.

Alternatively, you can report them anonymously on the Cheshire Police website
