How will Alderley celebrate the Queen's Jubilee?

The Government have announced that there will be a special 4-day bank holiday for the Diamond Jubilee next year.

The 2012 late May bank holiday will be moved to Monday 4th June 2012 and an additional Jubilee bank holiday will be on Tuesday 5th June 2012.

Schools in England and Wales will be able to close on Tuesday 5th June 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and if a school is already closed on 5th June, for half term or another reason, it will be able to close on an alternative day.

Local residents are already thinking about what we should do in Alderley Edge to mark 60 years of the Queen's reign.

Christine Munro, who organised the fantastic Alderley Edge May Fair, said "We had a AEMF meeting last night and agreed that we would like to do another event but felt we would like to keep to a similar date.

"So the date of the next May Fair will be Saturday 19th May 2012 and during the day we will be organising a jubilee party for everyone. We are not sure of the details for this at the moment but we will keep you posted.

"I do think it would be great to do something in the village over the weekend of the jubilee celebrations and I would be happy to help with the organisation of this."

Parish Councillor Melanie Connor said "We're going to discuss the jubilee at the Parish Council meeting on June 13th.

"Councillor Mary Maczkowiak and I are very keen to have an event in the village. For the millennium we had a huge screen, music, food and a bar in the park. Everyone you talk to who went to it talks about what a good time was had by all. It was great fun and a huge amount of people attended it.

"I am very excited about this, and I know through conversations with others, that they are too. I think it should be a late afternoon party going into the night, and fireworks hopefully. If the beacon is being lit on the Edge, it would be great to get that on a screen, and also other things going on around the country could be streamed.

"The other idea is a giant Sunday lunch either in the park or all the way down London Road. This is one of the things that the palace are trying to organise all over. I shall think about this one a bit more."

Buckingham Palace will be co-ordinating a programme of events centred around the extended weekend to include a Big Jubilee Lunch, a Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the Thames, a concert at Buckingham Palace and the lighting of 2012 beacons throughout the United Kingdom.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has produced guidance to help communities celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by organising street parties and communities can apply to the Big Lottery Fund for funding for a local event through the Awards for All Scheme.
