Alderley Edge resident Rio Ferdinand has just passed the milestone of 1 million followers on the social networking site Twitter.
That makes Ferdinand the most followed footballer in this country. Only 3 footballers in the world have more followers.
First and second place go to two Real Madrid players, with Brazilian midfielder Kaka having over 3.8 million followers and former Alderley Edge resident Cristiano Ronaldo having 2.8 million followers. Just ahead of Ferdinand is the Barcelona player Andrés Iniesta with over 1.1 million followers.
In between providing some fascinating insights into the world of football, local resident Rio Ferdinand can often be found engaging in some entertaining banter with Piers Morgan and Prestbury resident Robbie Savage. He has also recently managed to get many of his team mates to join Twitter, including Wayne Rooney who passed the 500,000 followers mark yesterday just 21 days after his first tweet.
Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that allows you to send short text messages, called 'tweets', to your followers which are limited to 140 characters in length.
On first glance it may seem baffling and pointless, but once people start using Twitter they have found it to be an intriguing, useful and addictive service that enables you to get instant updates on just about everything that interests you.
