Winner announced for May Fair poster competition

With less than a month to go, plans for the Alderley Edge May Fair are in the final stages.

Organised by local resident Christine Munro, along with Soroptimist International and representatives from local groups and organisations, it looks certain to be a fantastic event for the whole community.

Christine said "We stopped taking bookings for the event several weeks ago. The park is full of entertainments and a large variety of stalls, we can't take any more. Lets pray for the sun to shine now and it should be a good day."

Children from the three local schools were invited to enter a competition to design a poster for the May Fair which will be printed and on display around the village to promote the event.

The winner of the competition was Georgi Clarke in class 5H at The Ryleys, whose painting can be seen above. Finlay Chadwick, aged 10 and also from The Ryleys, came second and third place went to Talia from Year 6 at Alderley Edge Community Primary School. All three winners will receive book tokens which will be presented at the Alderley Edge May Fair on Saturday 21st May.

The event will start with a procession through the village led by a white horse and accompanying knights. The parade will feature a whole host of dance groups and marching bands as well as a vintage tractor, fire engine and double decker bus.

There will be a fancy dress competition, the theme of which will be The Weirdstone of Brisingamen and entrants into the competition can take part in the parade if they wish, with Thomas the Tank Engine in attendance to give rides to the fancy dress entrants who are too small to walk all the way.

The roads will be closed so the parade can march from the Festival Hall down London Road to the park which will be packed full of attractions, stalls, entertainment and refreshments.

Christine added "The parade is already lining up and entries to the fancy dress competition are coming in. Don't forget to get your entry in as early as possible to be sure of a place.

"Thank you to everyone for their support and it is lovely to receive such enthusiastic comments from local people in Alderley Edge and Wilmslow.

"Anyone wishing to be involved or help on the day will be most welcome!"
