Church offers historical tours

St Mary's Church in Nether Alderley will be open to visitors every Sunday from April 24th.

A team of tour guides will be on hand to show visitors around the beautiful church with its wealth of history.

The churchyard at St Mary's lies sheltered beneath the branches of a 1200 year old yew tree, whilst the porch and nave, which are the oldest parts of the building, date back to AD1300.

Jenny Youatt said "St Mary's is a treasure trove, steeped in the history of ancient Alderley.

"Like all great historic churches, St Mary's owes many of its unique features to the patronage of the local aristocratic family - the Stanleys of Alderley. Their stamp on the church is everywhere, from the impressive family mausoleum in the grounds, to the memorial tombs of the first and second Lord Stanleys in the sanctuary, but perhaps their most unique addition to the church is the Stanley Pew, elevated on the south wall of the church like a royal opera box and sumptuously decorated with red furnishings."

In addition to the Sunday services, the church will be open every Sunday afternoon, between 2.00pm until 4.30pm, from Easter through to the end of October. Whilst tour guides are always on hand, there is no obligation to have a tour, if you prefer you can just go along and have a wander.

The tours can be tailor-made to suit your requirements and admission is free.

This is a beautiful church in a peaceful setting. I hope many local residents will take the time to make a visit on the Sunday afternoons when it is open from Easter right through to October and bring family and friends with them.
