Poetry fan hopes to form local group

A keen fan of poetry is looking for like-minded locals to join her in setting up a poetry group.

Shiela Roe, 63, who moved to Alderley Edge with her husband last year, having taken early retirement from work as a medical secretary, is very fond of both writing poems and reading the work of others.

Ten years ago Shiela enrolled for a BA in creative writing at Bolton university, intending to specialise in fiction writing, but she became interested in poetry thanks to the "marvellous tutors" who introduced her to modern poets and encouraged Shiela to write her work.

Having achieved a 1st in creative writing, Shiela went on to do an MA specialising in modern poetry, which she completed in 2009 with a distinction. However, having enrolled for a Phd researching some of the American women poets, Shiela decided to quit when her husband, who suffers from Parkinson's, required more support.

Shiela told me "I'm very keen to keep with the poetry and my own writing. I'm just finishing a course on poetry and art which is run by the Manchester branch of the poetry school, and I attend poetry readings and book launches whenever I can.

"Most poets attend a work shop where they discuss each other's work and the work of published poets. The nearest one I could find was in Chorlton, so I thought I'd see if there was anyone out there who shared my interest.

"I would suggest arranging an initial meeting in a coffee shop to talk about my idea, and then after that would suggest meeting monthly in each other's houses for 1-2 hours to workshop each other's poems and read the work of published poets."

Poetry fans who are interested in starting a local group should email Shiela or call her on 07581 285052.
