Luncheon club calls for more volunteers

Alderley Edge Luncheon Club is looking for volunteers to help provide a hot, healthy and balanced meal for elderly people within the community.

For the past 46 years WRVS volunteers have been providing local pensioners with a two-course lunch twice a week, during school term time, at Alderley Edge Methodist Church. These lunches are very popular with over 30 diners usually attending on Tuesdays and around 25 on Thursdays.

The Luncheon Club is very important because sharing a freshly cooked meal with others provides the diners not only with nutrition, but also company and an opportunity to socialise on a regular basis.

The meals cost £3.00 and consist of traditional favourites such as shepherds pie with bread and butter pudding.

Volunteers are usually on duty once a month, either on a Tuesday or Thursday for about 4 hours. No special skills are required and volunteers work in teams of four preparing and serving food, then washing up of course.

Alderley Edge resident Anne Bale, who volunteers for WRVS, said "Although we work hard during that time, there is plenty of opportunity for chatting. The volunteers get a lot of satisfaction from working as a team to produce a tasty meal for some very appreciative diners.

"Becoming a volunteer with luncheon club suits people who want to actively participate in the community and wish to be able to see the results of their endeavours."

WRVS, formerly the Women's Royal Voluntary Service, is seeking volunteers of all ages and backgrounds, and welcomes both men and women.

Anne added "Like our diners, volunteers come from Alderley Edge and surrounding areas. At present we have several volunteer vacancies, so if you are interested in joining us please contact Veronica Langton on 01625 583720 or Julie Dickson on 01625 536412 to find out more."

WRVS is one of the UK's largest charities and voluntary organisations, and their lunch clubs gives older people the opportunity to leave the house, meet old friends and make new ones in a warm and friendly setting.
