Alderley girls participate in Model United Nations

March11 003

Ten pupils from Alderley Edge School for Girls recently attended the International Model United Nations Conference hosted by Kingswood School in Bath.

Model United Nations, or MUN as it is commonly known, is designed to replicate the United Nations and educate school children about international relations, current affairs, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda.

There was a real international flavour to the conference which welcomed over six hundred student delegates from 48 different schools across the UK and Europe.

Representing Lithuania and Sierra Leone, the Alderley girls debated international issues such as the rights to a fair trial, democracy in the Middle East, the situation in Sudan, climate change, the provision of clean water and many more.

The girls contributions included the writing of draft amendments and speaking in debates within their various committees.

Mrs Kilshaw Walster, Head of Classics at Alderley Edge School for Girls commented, "MUN is an activity which is growing in popularity and our girls performed extremely well at the conference - we are sure they could be the politicians and policy makers of the future!

"Many thanks must go to the girls for their enthusiasm at the event and, Director of Studies Mrs Duthie and School Chaplain Mrs Hostler for accompanying the girls on their visit."
