Sats results among best in the country

The results of national curriculum tests for 10-11 year-olds were released by the Government this week and show that local schools have performed well above the national average.

As the table below illustrates, across the 11 local schools which took part in May's Sats 87.8% achieved Level 4, the expected level for their age, in both maths and English, compared to 73% nationally.

About 25% of schools nationally boycotted the Sats this year because they object to the test results being used to create league tables, feel they narrow the curriculum and cause too much stress to children. Two Wilmslow schools, Dean Oaks Primary School and St Benedict's Catholic Primary School, supported the national action and chose to boycott the exams.

Across Cheshire East Level 4 or higher for English and maths was achieved by 80% of pupils, placing the local authority fifth equal in England. Cheshire East schools' results are also one percentage point higher than last year.

Cheshire East Councillor Hilda Gaddum, Cabinet member with responsibility for children and families, said: "The results are very encouraging and I would like to congratulate all the primary schools who took part for their achievement.

"Many schools across Cheshire East achieved an average Level 4 pass rate of 90 per cent – bucking the national average by almost 20 per cent."

The contextual added value is a measure created to show how much progress pupils at a particular school have made compared with others from similar backgrounds. The contextual added value score is calculated for each pupil by comparing their performance at Key Stage 2 with those of other pupils who are from similar backgrounds and achieved similar results at Key Stage 1 nationally.
