If you want to learn to play an instrument, or fancy learning to play a different one, then you'll be interested to know that the Alderley District Scout Band are holding an open evening next month to recruit new members.

On Wednesday 1st December youngsters and their parents are invited to meet the band members, find out all about the band and have a go on the instruments.

Alderley District Scout Band, which was formed in 1963 with just one drum and one bugle, consists of boys and girls aged between 8 and 25 and provides the opportunity to learn a new instrument whilst having fun. The band takes part in competitions, parades, fetes and other events, marching and playing music on bugles, snare drums, bass drums, bell lyres and cymbals.

Members do not require any prior musical experience and all the instruments and uniforms are loaned to them with tuition provided free of charge.

In its history the band has taken part in national competitions and won over 500 trophies, including many Supreme National Championships where they have competed against bands from all over the country. The band has also played at Windsor Castle, in front of the Queen, at the Lord Mayor's Parades, in both Manchester and London, and at the Royal Tournament.

This year the band has taken part in 4 competitions, winning one and coming runners-up in two more, which means that with just one competition left this year the band are guaranteed at least second place in the league.

Most recently, the Alderley District Scout Band took part in the bypass event, playing during the build up to the run and leading off the walk at 11am.

The open evening will run from 7pm-8.30pm at 1st Wilmslow Scout Hut, Carnival Field, Altrincham Road in Wilmslow. For further information contact Emma Simpson on 01625 527750 or visit the Alderley District Scout Band website.
