Be safe this Bonfire Night

Last year, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service attended over 140 bonfire or firework related incidents between 16th October and 6th November.

Many of these fires were caused by anti-social behaviour and presented a risk to the community when near people's homes, so this year the service will be deploying additional resources to help reduce incidences of anti-social behavior involving illegally laid bonfires and fireworks.

Cheshire Police and Cheshire Fire & Rescue Service are therefore urging families not to hold their own displays this year but to attend professionally organised events instead, which is the best way to make the most of Bonfire Night without putting yourself or your family at risk.

Colin Heyes, the Service's Arson Reduction Manager, said: "This is not about us stopping people having fun, this is about us trying to keep people and property safe from the potentially devastating impact of fire. We want people to enjoy themselves over this time, but we want them to do it safely."

Local residents wishing to celebrate Bonfire Night have plenty of choice because this weekend organised events are being held every night in Alderley Edge.

Tonight, Friday 5th, both the Drum & Monkey and Royal Oak pubs are having their annual firework displays. On Saturday evening, Alderley Edge Community Primary School are holding their bonfire and firework display then on Sunday Alderley Edge Cricket Club will be hosting their annual fireworks display. Entertainment on offer at these various events includes barbecues, licensed bars, stalls and children's fun fairs - see our events calendar for full details and timings for each event.

A big problem during the run up to bonfire night is people building their own bonfires on stretches of public land, this could be in parks, on grass verges or even roundabouts.

Colin Heyes explained: "Not only is it illegal to set bonfires on public land, it is dangerous. We know all too well how something that starts out as a bit of fun can end up with someone suffering the scars of a serious and life changing injury."

"People can help us and themselves by reducing the opportunities for people to build bonfires and set other small deliberate fires. Make sure that wheelie bins are secured if possible, and out of view. Dispose of any other rubbish you have properly. Do not leave it where anyone could use as bonfire fuel, or even worse, set light to it.

"Small fires adjacent to buildings often lead to much more serious fires which cause severe damage and put lives at risk. Tragically, there have been a number of wheelie bin fires in the UK that have spread to buildings and resulted in fatalities."

People wanting to report the building of bonfires or any anti-social behaviour during the bonfire period should call 0300 123 5500. Anyone wishing to report more serious cases of arson should call Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
