Cricket: Edge in top form again

Alderley Edge batsmen were in prime form again last weekend as they chased and overhauled a challenging total set by home side Urmston in the ECB Cheshire Premier League.

With the start delayed by heavy rain, it looked like the weather might have the final word with Urmston getting much the worse of the bad weather about, but after a wait of two hours the match got underway having been reduced to a 38 overs a side game.

The home side batted well from the start and Edge had difficulty in making serious inroads into the Urmston batting. Opening bowler Richard Wilkinson looked the most dangerous and figures of two for 63 off 14 overs did not do justice to a sustained piece of fast bowling. Ethan Harding’s leg spin also earned two wickets as Urmston’s batsmen failed to go on to make the big scores that looked possible at one time.

Aussie Sean Clarence top scored for Urmston with 57 as he continued his impressive run of scores in the premier league. After 38 overs Urmston were able to declare on what looked a very good score of 209 for 6 with the home side looking favourites at tea to secure a much needed victory as they struggle near the bottom of the table.

After tea, for the second week running, it was Richard Wilkinson and Adam Worrall that took charge of the Alderley reply as they put on a match winning, unbroken partnership of 158, as both batsmen scored exactly 90. After putting on a partnership of over 190 the previous week, this was another awesome display that the home side resigned to defeat long before the inevitable victory was chalked up by Edge with almost 3 overs to go.

This victory leaves Edge in clear second place in the premier league table with 8 matches left to play and leaders Neston looking very vulnerable as their shaky form continues. At this stage of the season it looks like the eventual champions will come from the current top four in the league – Neston, Alderley Edge, Nantwich and Hyde.

Next Saturday Edge take on reigning champions Oulton Park at home in the league followed by a tricky looking fixture in the quarter-final of the Cheshire Cup at Nantwich on Sunday.

Final Score: Cheshire County Premier League Urmston 209-6 Alderley Edge 213-2 Alderley Edge won by 8 wickets.
