Cricket: A good week for Edge

It has been a good time for Alderley Edge’s batsmen as they plundered 467 runs for the loss of only 5 wickets last weekend as they made good progress in both the Cheshire Premier League and the Cheshire Cup.

Last Saturday saw local rivals Toft visit Moss Lane for an important game in the league with runaway rivals Neston at the top of the table showing signs of faltering of late and a number of clubs, including Toft and Edge, in a position to mount a challenge.

Edge batted first and there was a good opening partnership of 75 between Alan Day and Mark Currie that set Alderley on a positive course. It was a superb third wicket partnership of 190 however between wicket-keeper Adam Worrall and Richard Wilkinson that put Edge in a totally dominant position. Both scored centuries as they dispatched 30 boundaries between them that enabled Edge to be able to declare after only 50 overs with the score at 310 for 4.

After tea Toft never looked likely to be able to challenge the home side’s total despite having 60 overs to get the required runs. Edge could not however get the final wicket as Toft hung on for a draw for the last 10 overs with numbers 10 and 11 at the crease.

Most damage was done by the Alderley spinners with left-armer Mark Warnes grabbing three wickets and 16 year-old Ethan Harding taking 2 wickets. Edge took an important 17 points to Toft’s 9, and with other results going their way, Edge moved up into second place and closed the gap significantly on Neston at the top of the table.

The following day Edge, as holders of the trophy, had a great victory in the Cheshire Cup over Chester Boughton Hall, winning by 9 wickets, as Mark Currie passed 1,000 runs for the season in all competitions, a remarkable feat of consistency, with Alan Day scoring 44 not out in an opening partnership of 137 as Alderley cruised past Chester's 154 for 9.

Next Saturday Alderley are away in the league at erratic Urmston who have recently suffered a poor run of form that has plunged them close to the relegation zone.

Final score Cheshire County Premier League: Alderley Edge 310-4 Toft 252-9 Draw.
